Inspiring insights from HEI’s Class of 2024
This spring, McMaster University’s Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact (HEI) is celebrating the successes of over 100 students, across five graduate programs and two convocation ceremonies.
On May 22, 2024, graduates from HEI crossed the stage at FirstOntario Concert Hall in front of family, friends, and supporters at the Faculty of Health Sciences spring convocation ceremony. The event marked the culmination of their years of hard work and dedication. These accomplished graduates completed their studies in a range of programs including the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Epidemiology, Health Policy PhD, Health Research Methodology PhD and MSc, and Master of Public Health. The DeGroote School of Business spring convocation ceremony is scheduled for June 14, 2024, where we will honour our e-Health students. This is a unique healthcare graduate program offered through a collaboration by the Faculty of Health Sciences (within HEI), the Faculty of Engineering, and the DeGroote School of Business.
We asked graduates from each program to share their experiences and insights, providing a glimpse into their transformative journey at HEI.
Eman Aljohani | Graduate Diploma in Clinical Epidemiology
How has your program or HEI prepared you for your future career in health research or practice?
“The clinical epidemiology program at HEI equipped me with essential skills in research methodology, biostatistics, and critical appraisal of literature. This training has provided me with a solid foundation to conduct high-quality research and to apply evidence-based practices in my clinical work. Additionally, the program emphasized interdisciplinary collaboration, which is crucial in medical care where a multidisciplinary approach often leads to better patient outcomes.”
How do you envision the future of healthcare, and what role do you see yourself playing in it?
“I envision a future of healthcare that is increasingly personalized and data-driven, with advancements in technology playing a crucial role. In the future, I see myself as a clinician-researcher who bridges the gap between clinical practice and research. My goal is to utilize data and research findings to develop effective solutions that enhance neonatal care and outcomes.”
What advice would you give to incoming students joining your program or HEI?
“To incoming students, I would advise making the most of the resources and opportunities available at HEI. Engage actively in discussions, seek out mentorship, and take advantage of networking opportunities with peers and faculty. Building strong relationships and collaborations can open doors to new ideas and professional growth. Additionally, balance is key; while academic success is important, taking care of your well-being is equally crucial for success.”
Ahmed Atef Belal | Health Policy PhD
What was your most memorable experience during your time in your program or at HEI?
“There are many memorable moments: my first day on campus, the day when I passed the comprehensive exams, the first time I worked as a TA, but the one I hold dearly was when I helped organize the first student-led scientific conference within the Health Policy PhD program in 6 years. It was such a success and privilege to be part of that team of enthusiastic students who organized the event in such a professional way. There was great support from the administration, which helped us succeed.”
What advice would you give to incoming students joining your program or HEI?
“I was given this advice early on, but I didn’t commit to it, and now I see how it would have helped me greatly. Organize your time, prioritize your mental health, and keep strong connections with your friends and family. Ask your program director and your supervisor well in advance what your duties and responsibilities clearly are because if you don’t know them, no one will tell you about them, and no one will do them for you. Seek advice from your senior colleagues. They are your most helpful resource.”
Maram Khaled | Health Research Methodology
In what ways do you plan to apply your learnings from your program or HEI in your future endeavors?
“As I start the next phase in my career as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Anesthesia at McMaster University, I appreciate everything that I learnt during my PhD studies at the HRM program. I have been exposed to learning rigorous research methods and novel research approaches, which will allow me to confidently conduct future research. I strongly value the independence that was strongly encouraged throughout the program, and I definitely appreciate the opportunity to establish collaborations, which will continue to strengthen my future research.”
What advice would you give to incoming students joining your program or HEI?
“I advise incoming students to explore and make use of these various resources and support offered by HEI. This is not restricted to courses, seminars, and other educational opportunities, but as importantly, through peer support. Whether through the HRM student association events, Discord platform, or study groups, there is always someone who has had a similar experience and can provide advice and support.”
Rebecca Wijers Contreras | Master of Public Health
What advice would you give to incoming students joining your program or HEI?
“Don’t be afraid to try new things, like joining a project or a team where you don’t know anyone. It is always a good opportunity to open doors and expand our knowledge about research that we never imagined was being done out there.”
Liridona Isai | Master of Public Health
What advice would you give to incoming students joining your program or HEI?
“Embrace opportunities for experiential learning, such as practicums, research projects, electives, and community engagement initiatives. Immerse yourself in diverse perspectives and embrace collaboration. These actions will enrich your academic journey, providing invaluable insights and the essential skills needed to tackle complex challenges in your future career in public health.”
Sneh Sunder | eHealth MSc
How do you envision the future of healthcare, and what role do you see yourself playing in it?
“In envisioning the future of healthcare, I see a landscape where innovation and technology converge to create patient-centered solutions, enhancing both outcomes and efficiency. I aspire to play a pivotal role in this evolution by championing accessible healthcare for all, leveraging my expertise to bridge gaps and ensure equitable access to transformative eHealth initiatives.”
On behalf of HEI, congratulations to all graduates!
